The film itself was nothing special but they way the zombies themselves are portrayed is interesting to say the least, the zombies featured are more closely based on the real world legends of zombies used by witch doctors, as they seem to be mindless slaves to their master (Bela Lugosi) whom uses them as workers in his sugar mill.
While being the first movie of what was to become something of a huge part of the horror genre the film is not without its flaws (huge ones at that..). The film is filmed quite nicely with quite a few shots and scenes that seem to be extremely experimental, even by today's standards, the sets are relatively nice and Gothic giving a great atmosphere, interestingly enough there are rumors that the final scenes of the movie were actually filmed on the set where the 1931 Dracula movie was filmed.
The acting in the movie ranged from okay to mediocre with an obvious exception to Lugosi himself as he's always a pleasure to watch (leaving out Edward Wood movies), the plot is.. well, its not really engaging or explained too clearly, the film seems to be broken into two kinds of scenes; ones where stuff happens and ones where people spout exposition, nothing too amazing or memorable about most of the scenes without Lugosi in them. The end scene is a whole different topic, its hard to explain without having first seen it but watching the ending of this movie is like being in a dream world, things don't make sense, nothing is explained and it just gets more strange the more thought is put into it.
Overall the film is alright but I don't think I would recommend it to people openly, maybe to those interested in movie history or just Lugosi addicts.
The movie itself is actually public domain so to anyone interested its free and legal to download, maybe its just the thing for a Halloween night?
